Move over Mediterranean

All over Southwest Florida residents are rapidly freeing themselves from heavy scrolled iron work, terra cotta tiles, dark hardwood floors, sweeping archways, and macaroni and cheese colored walls.  These items are piling up like shoulder pads after the 80’s!  Mediterranean, once admired and embraced as sophisticated, elegant, and posh styling, is now passé.

I have an appreciation for this style.  As a matter of fact, I landed the HOBI Award in 2009, together with Frank Mairano Associates, with a design nod to the Mediterranean style…but it’s 2017…time to move on.  As a designer I’m continually looking for the next new trend, trying to stay ahead of the curve.  I look to offer my clients designs and ideas that are slightly ahead of what many other designers are presenting.

Currently the movement in Southwest Florida is towards Coastal Contemporary, a harsh contrast to the Mediterranean style so many are looking to shed.

Wall finishes are a sleek level 5 finish (smooth and textureless).  Floors are brighter whether they’re hardwood or tile. Ceilings are dressed with white shiplap, either crisply painted or accented with beams.  Shaker cabinets in white and grey tones finished with glass tiles and an occasional waterfall counter grace kitchens.

Still this trend, while running hot, is morphing and a transformation is happening.  It is so refreshing to see architects, builders, and designers spinning this coastal contemporary craze into their own signature style.

I expect that we will soon see Coastal Contemporary transition into a more modern feeling … a much easier transformation than from your Mama’s Mediterranean!
